On January 30, 2003 Stars & Stripes confirmed that elements of 1st Infantry had received orders to deploy to Turkey in support of a war with Iraq. Roughly 1,800 soldiers were initially deployed, including troops from the Headquarters and Headquarters Company of the Division, and the 601st Aviation Support Battalion.

The 601st Aviation Support Battalion, headquartered in Katterbach, Germany, keeps Apache AH-64s, such as this one, flying high. The unit was recently selected to receive the 2000 Outstanding Aviation Logistics Support Unit of the Year Award from the Army Aviation Association of America Feb. 23, 2001. Along with its primary mission to provide aviation supply support and maintenance to 4th Brigade, and 1st Squadron, 4th U.S. Cavalry, 601st ASB soldiers and leaders designed and assisted in building an aircraft maintenance facility for permanent use in Camp Bondsteel, Kosovo. They also provided aviation support to units in Macedonia and Kosovo.
